Profile

Mel is an associate in the employment team in Birmingham, and a member of the specialist Police Federation team. He advises on a range of contentious and non-contentious employment matters in employment tribunals and has particular expertise in discrimination claims, whistleblowing and regulatory issues.

Prior to joining Penningtons Manches Cooper in January 2023, Mel practised civil litigation and corporate/business immigration law, assisting UK-based companies in obtaining Home Office sponsor licences to recruit foreign skilled workers, and advising them on Care Quality Commission compliance and employment law. During this time, Mel accumulated a portfolio of 34 successful sponsor licence applications.

His experience also includes claims, representations and commencing litigation and judicial review against public bodies in various jurisdictions.

Recent work highlights

Successfully making representations for the revocation for a deportation order against a British Army veteran, in Joram Nechironga v SSHD, a case reported on internationally.
Representing a claimant (care worker) in a victimisation, whistleblowing and unfair dismissal case, leading to a settlement resolution.
Reaching a favourable pre-final hearing settlement in favour of a claimant in a case involving direct race discrimination, unfair dismissal, and harassment.
Representing a claimant in the employment tribunal case of X v Next PLC in a case concerning unfair dismissal and discrimination arising from disability.
Reversing a County Court default judgement in relation to an incorrectly issued NHS debt claim against his client.
