Andrew is a partner in the commercial real estate team in Birmingham. He is a highly experienced real estate solicitor specialising in commercial and mixed used development in the UK.

He has a strong track record on complex development and investment transactions such as options and acquisitions, pre-lettings and lettings, forward fundings, bespoke development agreements and joint ventures/collaboration agreements. Andrew works closely with developer, occupier and investor clients and the firm’s construction, tax, corporate and banking teams to make complex, multi-party transactions happen.

I build long lasting relationships with clients which stand the test of time. I have a hands-on approach and will always seek to understand what is of real importance to the client on any transaction, so that I may provide the best possible service.

His practice includes industrial and warehouse/distribution schemes (including extensive refurbishments and relocations), residential build to rent and purpose-built student accommodation schemes and retail and leisure schemes (which include EV and/or solar elements). He has particular expertise in dealing with high buildings in city centres. Andrew also manages national portfolios for distribution/industrial occupiers. He always seeks to understand the key drivers and constraints for all the parties in a transaction, so as to help find solutions to difficult problems as quickly as possible. Andrew is particularly interested and involved in the use of technology to improve the efficiency of real estate transactions. He is an active member of the Investment Property Forum, and has been ranked in Chambers UK, and named in the Legal 500 as a ‘leading partner’.

Recent work highlights

Micro-chip R&D and manufacturing facility

Representing the developer on the development of a micro-chip R&D and manufacturing facility for an international owner/occupier. The project value was circa £110 million.

Four-unit industrial and logistics scheme

Acting for the developer on a phased four-unit industrial and logistics scheme, including site acquisition and planning to pre-letting, forward funding and construction.

Out of town retail development

Assisting the developer with the conditional site acquisition, pre-letting, planning and forward funding of a large out of town retail development.

Commercial investment/development

Acting for the investor/developer on the acquisition of an industrial facility and its subsequent splitting and repurposing for distribution and leisure uses, together with associated sale and pre-letting of the parts.

International commercial investment

Advising a Hong Kong based investor, using an offshore vehicle, on a simultaneous acquisition, long term management agreement and re-gear of leases at a fully occupied industrial scheme.

City centre residential development

Representing the developer on a £55 million forward funding and development of a city centre build to rent development (including site assembly, highway closure and rights of light issues).

Student accommodation portfolio sale

Assisting the developer/owner on the portfolio sale of stabilised purpose-built student accommodation facilities to a UK investment fund.

Student accommodation refinance

Acting for the owner on a simultaneous shareholding restructure and refinance of a purpose-built student accommodation scheme comprising a tall building.
