Profile

Richard is a partner in the corporate team and is based in the Birmingham office. He is a vastly experienced transactional lawyer whose practice includes mergers and acquisitions, private equity, restructurings, and corporate governance. Transactions Richard works on are typically complex, strategic and high value, and/or have an international dimension, often from North America. He has a particular focus on the technology and energy sectors where he is able to bring industry-specific insights.

A trusted adviser to many of the long-standing businesses he has acted for, Richard is a non-executive director for Claverley Group Limited.

Ranked as a Leading Individual by Chambers, Richard has been described by the directory as having “a considerable breadth of experience in corporate transactions, ably assisting clients with M&A deals, share sales and group reorganisations”.

Recent work highlights

Acting for the Griggs family in relation to the £3.7 billion IPO of Dr Martens plc, when they sold Dr Martens to Permira Private Equity for £300 million and retained a stake in the private equity led business.
Acting for a Canadian Technology acquirer on four acquisitions since early 2020, including a UK software business with trading subsidiaries in 13 jurisdictions.
Advising on the sale of HL Plastics to Quanex, a quoted US buyer, for $145 million. Richard advised on the original MBO, a first sale, a buyback of part of the business, and then this second sale.
Leading the sale of a premier Guernsey media business to a Guernsey based asset manager, including leading negotiations and managing the Guernsey legal advisers and pensions advisers.
