Profile

Laura is a partner in the family law team in the Guildford office. She advises on all aspects of relationship breakdown including divorce, financial settlements, children matters, cohabitee separations, TOLATA litigations and pre-nuptial agreements.

With a thriving practice which includes a significant amount of work from referrals, Laura provides clear and robust professional guidance in a sensitive and empathetic manner. She is skilled in helping clients during complex situations, focusing on practical solutions while ensuring the best outcome for their needs, be that solicitor-led negotiations, arbitration, court proceedings or private settlement hearings.

Laura joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in August 2016, having originally been trained by the head of the Guildford family law team, Veronica Gilmour, at a previous firm. She qualified in 2010. Laura is a member of Resolution, an organisation which promotes a constructive and pragmatic approach to all family law matters. She is the current co-chair of The Association of Women Solicitors - Surrey, and was formerly the treasurer and deputy chair of YRes Surrey for a number of years. In 2021, Laura was named Citywealth’s Silver Family Lawyer of the Year - Senior Associate.

Recent work highlights

  • Offering bespoke representation in all child arrangement matters and disputes, outside of court proceedings wherever possible using non-court dispute resolution (NCDR) options.
  • Representing parents within contentious disputes over how and where a child should spend their time; reintroduction after a period of exclusion; analysis of safeguarding allegations; international and domestic relocations; and cases where safeguarding measures are required, including the appointment of a Children’s Guardian and/or expert input.
  • Working on high value cases with complicated international company and property assets involving expert accountancy reports and evidential scrutiny.
  • Representing a client facing multiple concurrent cross-applications as to financial matters, injunctive proceedings and child arrangements in a disputed allegations case which crossed various jurisdictions, ultimately negotiating compromises of all claims.
  • Representing unmarried parties to secure their property interests and, where applicable, further suitable housing and capital provision for their children.
  • Drafting and negotiating high value pre-nuptial agreements, simultaneously ensuring robust protection alongside fair financial provision.
