James is head of the firm’s nationwide commercial real estate team. He has over 25 years’ experience of the UK real estate market and is known for his common-sense and commercial approach when advising clients on complex and time-critical transactions.

He specialises in all aspects of freehold and leasehold acquisitions and disposals (including portfolio transactions), development work (including site assembly and forward funding deals), and non-contentious landlord and tenant law. James advises both institutional and private investors and counts amongst his list of longstanding clients one of the UK’s largest institutional investors and one of the UK’s largest local authority pension funds, each with multi-billion-pound property portfolios under management. His client advisory expertise spans the office, retail, hotels and leisure and industrial and logistics sectors.

Acting as lead partner in a cross-disciplinary team advising on a large UK-based hotel portfolio refinance and disposal for c£850 million, owned by an internationally recognised hospitality brand.

Distribution hub

Acting for a major UK institutional investor on its £100 million+ purchase within a short timeframe of a recently developed distribution park near Leicester.

Hotel purchase and leaseback

Leading the team advising on a prominent institutional asset manager on one of two linked c£40 million purchases and leasebacks of recently developed hotels from a well-known national hotel developer and operator.

Long lease garden centre

Advising a large UK local authority pension funds on its acquisition of a substantial garden centre near Bristol for c£25 million, now on a long lease to a leading UK garden centre operator.

Redeveloped retail park

Acting for a UK insurance company on its acquisition of an eight-unit retail park in Reading for c£27 million. The asset had been substantially redeveloped by the seller.

Multi-let retail park

Advised a local authority pension fund on its purchase of a large multi-let retail park in a prime location between Bristol and Bath for c£23 million.
