Profile

Stephen is a partner in the commercial dispute resolution team and is based in the Birmingham office. He is a commercial litigation and insolvency specialist with significant experience in advising on complicated, high value matters that require in-depth knowledge across multiple disciplines. During his career, he has spent time on secondment to both an international engineering company and a High Street bank.

Working with businesses of all sizes, from large corporations to SMEs, Stephen’s track record spans a range of sectors, including real estate, financial services, automotive and energy. Over the past three years, he has acted for clients in the Court of Appeal in three appeals concerning unfair prejudice, contempt proceedings and freezing injunctions. He succeeded in all these appeals.

Stephen is ranked as a leading individual in The Legal 500 where he is described as ‘a superb leader’ with ‘a great combination of technical acumen and business nous’. He is the Midlands regional chair and council member of R3, the UK’s leading trade association for insolvency and restructuring professionals.

Recent work highlights

  • Successfully defending two directors against claims of £35 million for breach of fiduciary duty and conspiracy to cause loss - Henderson & Jones Limited v Ross and Barnes (High Court).
  • Defending partnership dissolution claims and unfair prejudice petitions against a £30 million business - Loveridge v Loveridge (High Court and Court of Appeal).
  • Advising an individual on a freezing injunction pursued by a provisional liquidator over claims involving an alleged £50 million Ponzi scheme – Hunt v Black Capital (High Court and Court of Appeal).
  • Acting for the liquidator in multi-million pound claims over MTIC fraud within the supply chain of companies involved in the retail sector.
