Tom is a consultant in the London office specialising in shipping and marine insurance. His particular areas of expertise include casualty work such as collisions and groundings; contractual disputes – particularly those arising out of charter parties; and recovery actions on behalf of marine insurers.

He qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and worked in marine insurance before qualifying as a solicitor. Tom’s clients range from shipowners and long-term time charterers to voyage charterers, cargo interests and marine insurers.

The Legal 500  describes him as having “a good analytical mind which enables him to get to the heart of the matter”.

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for the successful claimant Spar Shipping AS in the High Court and Court of Appeal in the case of Spar Shipping AS v Grand China Logistics Holding (Group) Co Ltd.
  • Advising the owners and managers of a VLCC lost at sea following a collision and fire in January 2018.
  • Representing the owners and managers of a VLCC following an engine room flooding in April 2019.
  • Acting for a corporate defendant in English recognition and enforcement proceedings in which the claimant seeks damages of over US$1.3billion.
  • Advising the time charterers of a motor tanker following seizure of their chartered vessel by a foreign government and securing the clients’ claim against the party responsible.
