Katie Gordon, Senior Knowledge Lawyer at Penningtons Manches


Katie is an associate director and knowledge lawyer for the IP, IT and commercial team. Having trained at a leading London IP firm, she qualified into its commercial, IP and IT practice group in 2002. She has experience of advising clients on a range of agreements across a number of sectors including life sciences, consumer products and technology.

Katie supports the IP, IT and commercial team in delivering high quality, cost effective legal advice. She keeps the team up to date with legal developments, draft precedents and delivers training. Katie is also a member of the firm's knowledge management team and works closely with the firm's management board to implement strategies that drive innovation, process improvement and the facilitation of knowledge sharing across the firm.  

She holds a law degree from Manchester University (1996) and a postgraduate diploma in IP law and practice from Bristol University (2004). She is a member of the Society for Computers and Law.

Recent work highlights

  • Providing an update on recent contract law cases and their practical implications for in-house lawyers at the ‘PM Plus’ conference for in-house counsel in October 2016.
  • Writing an article on the Court of Justice of the European Union’s ruling in Genentech Inc v Hoechst GmbH, Sanofi-Aventis Deutschland GmbH that royalties can continue to be payable under a licence even after the patent has been revoked, provided that the licensee is free to terminate the licence on reasonable notice.
  • Running a series of contract drafting workshops for trainees and associates in the IP, IT and commercial practice group.
  • Writing an article for E-Commerce Law Reports on the exclusive distribution right under the Information Society Directive.
