Will Chetwood

Senior counsel (Self-Employed Consultant)

London

Profile

Will is a senior counsel in the shipping team in London. He regularly acts on a wide range of non-contentious maritime matters, from advising owners and other parties on the purchase of new and second-hand vessels and yachts to construction finance and FFA and ISDA contracts. His wealth of knowledge in all areas of the life cycle of vessels extends from their design and construction right through to their eventual scrapping.

In addition, he has a broad litigation practice, including advising clients on resolving disputes arising out of charterparties, memorandums of agreement, new building contracts, insurance issues and sale of goods disputes. He has also worked outside the pure maritime sphere advising recently on non-marine insurance disputes, sale of goods contracts and cross border insolvency issues.

Will has been recognised for his expertise in both dry shipping work and disputes by The Legal 500. He joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in 2023 from another prominent maritime firm where he was a partner.

Recent work highlights

  • Acting on the Nanfri, the leading House of Lords case on the applicability of set-off to time charters.
