Penningtons Manches employment partner, Chris Syder, has acted as the employer vice-chairperson on the International Labour Organisation’s Committee on Freedom of Association which met on 12, 13 and 20 March 2015 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Currently there are 148 cases before the committee in which complaints of breach of freedom of association principles have been submitted against governments. Freedom of association is a recognised human right. Cases range from breaches of civil liberties, to government interference in national collective bargaining procedures and anti-union discrimination. They often involve complaints concerning trade union protection in multinational companies. Chris is responsible for putting forward the employers' arguments and perspectives.
Chris is the CBI’s governing body representative for the International Labour Organisation and consequently is uniquely placed to help businesses understand the emerging commercial and human rights risks faced when operating across borders in a changing, globalised world.
