Penningtons Manches Cooper and Multilaw commended in Chambers Global Guide 2021

Posted: 25/02/2021

Chambers Global has recognised the strength of Penningtons Manches Cooper’s international offering as well as the services provided by Multilaw, the global network of independent law firms of which Penningtons Manches Cooper is a member, in its newly published 2021 edition. The Chambers Global guide ranks the top lawyers and law firms in over 200 jurisdictions around the world.

Penningtons Manches Cooper has been listed as a ‘global market leader’ by the directory for its “respected” shipping litigation practice, with its “particularly strong offering” in Greece and its “noteworthy presence” in both Spain and Singapore mentioned in the review. In addition, the firm’s Greece practice, located in Piraeus, has achieved individual recognition in the shipping (international firms) category: it has been praised for its “notable presence in high-end litigation and arbitration proceedings” and has been described as “well reputed for its work on charter party disputes and other dry shipping litigation”. The firm’s Singapore office and its “well-respected team of disputes lawyers” have also been independently ranked in a separate category for their expertise in international shipping litigation, arbitration and mediation.

Chambers Global has commended Piraeus office head Douglas Bateson for his commercial awareness and clients have described him to the directory as “very knowledgeable and experienced”. Piraeus-based partners Dimitris Anassis and Ioanna Vitta have also been ranked: Dimitris has been noted by clients for his “clear instructions and strategy” and Ioanna has been described as a “very experienced shipping lawyer” who offers “accurate and to-the-point advice”. In the Singapore practice review, “professional and skilful” partner Johan Wong has been recommended as being “knowledgeable about both shipping law and business practice throughout Asia” and as having a “good commercial understanding”. “Respected” Singapore partner Steffen Pedersen has been highlighted by the directory for his “impressive expertise” in a range of shipping matters including dispute resolution, with a client stating that they are able to recommend him “with confidence”. Juan Alegre, who leads the Penningtons Manches Cooper Madrid office, and Darryl Kennard, a partner in the London office, have both been featured as key contacts for the firm’s international shipping practice.

The 2021 guide also ranks international legal networks, with the listings influenced by the performance of individual member firms in the various Chambers guides. Multilaw has been awarded ‘elite’ status for the seventh consecutive year and commended for its “top-level service”. The ‘elite’ listing places Multilaw in an exclusive tier that comprises just eight other international networks which have achieved the same ranking worldwide. Penningtons Manches Cooper has been a member of Multilaw since its inception in 1990 and a number of its partners play an active role within the organisation, which is made up of 90 carefully selected independent member firms that work collaboratively across numerous countries, cultures, languages and jurisdictions in order to fulfil clients’ international needs.
