Penningtons Manches Cooper investigates maternity care concerns at Royal Surrey County Hospital

Penningtons Manches Cooper is currently instructed in a number of cases involving mothers who have raised concerns regarding the obstetric care they received at Royal Surrey County Hospital, part of Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.

These cases relate to questions about the standard of obstetric care provided during labour and in the immediate postnatal period. In particular, concerns have been raised regarding the care provided by obstetrician Mr Babatunde Thomas.

The trust has initiated formal investigations and, during the course of those investigations, concerns have reportedly been raised regarding Mr Thomas’s technical expertise and clinical skills. As a result, the trust has referred Mr Thomas to the General Medical Council (GMC), the independent regulator responsible for maintaining standards within the medical profession in the UK. The GMC’s investigations are currently ongoing.

Varisha Gorasia, associate at Penningtons Manches Cooper, comments:

“I am currently acting for mothers who have serious concerns regarding the maternity care they received at Royal Surrey County Hospital and, in particular, the care provided by Mr Thomas. Given the nature of the concerns that have been raised, there may be other women and families who have been adversely affected by their experiences. If you, or a loved one, received treatment from Mr Thomas and have concerns about the care provided, please do not hesitate to contact me for a confidential and informal discussion regarding your experiences.”
