Personal injury team welcomes new safety technology to reduce bus collisions

Posted: 04/08/2014

The personal injury team at Penningtons Manches LLP welcomes Transport for London’s (TfL) decision to trial detection software on selected buses as part of a continued drive to improve road safety in London.  Buses are being fitted with new technology that alerts drivers when pedestrians and cyclists are close to their vehicles in a bid to reduce collisions.

The routes chosen for the London trial are the ones which have a particularly high number of both pedestrian and cycle users.  The trial is due to start this month, August, and a report of the detailed findings will be available later this year.

Philippa Luscombe, partner in the personal injury team, commented: ‘’Roads in the capital are increasingly being used by a dangerous combination of large vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.  Each year there are significant numbers of road accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians who sustain catastrophic or fatal injuries. Any technology that potentially reduces the risk of collisions occurring and makes roads safer is very welcome and we will be interested to see the trial results.’’
