At the start of 2014 it was reported by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) that more than 23 million cosmetic and non-surgical procedures were performed in 2013. Cosmetic surgery continued to boom worldwide throughout 2014 with more extreme and bizarre procedures hitting the media spot light. Penningtons Manches’ specialist cosmetic surgery claims team reveals its famous five most extreme plastic surgery stories of 2014.
Jordan Parke, a 23-year-old British makeup artist, spent an estimated $150,000 on procedures, including eyebrow tattoos and lip injections, to look more like reality star Kim Kardashian.
Valeria Lukyanova is a Moldovan-Ukrainian model notable for her resemblance to a Barbie doll. Several sources describe her as a "real-life Barbie doll" and "human Barbie”. She has admitted that she has had breast implants but states that the rest of her body is completely natural and slender due to daily gym workouts and a special diet based on “light” and “air”.
Justin Jedlica had over 140 procedures to transform himself into a human Ken doll, including rhinoplasty, chest implants, shoulder implants, bicep implants, triceps implants, brow shaving and lifts, cheek augmentations, sub-pectoral implants, thigh implants, lip augmentations and calf implants.
Tatiana Williams, 42, has spent £60,000 sculpting her body over the past 20 years to achieve a bottom like Kim Kardashian’s. Her extensive plastic surgery has included black-market injections that have filled each of her bottom cheeks with an incredible 8lb of silicone. She said that similar high-risk illegal operations have maimed and killed a number of her friends but that she has no regrets.
Plastic surgery became huge business in South Korea in 2014 with women in nearby China visiting to have their procedures done. Some of them looked so different from their passport pictures following extensive surgery that they had problems getting through airport security to fly back home.
So what is 2015 likely to have in store for us? Elise Bevan, a solicitor in the clinical negligence team at Penningtons Manches LLP, said: “I anticipate that there will be no letup in the rising demand for aesthetic enhancements. A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has predicted that more than 55 million cosmetic surgery procedures will be performed in 2015. This more than quadruples the number of procedures performed in 2005.
“Experts anticipate that more discreet breast enhancements, Brazilian butt lifts and several cosmetic procedures in one session are some of the trends we can expect to see this year. Minimally invasive techniques and procedures are likely to continue to grow in popularity and more men will seek cosmetic surgery to look good and stay competitive in the job market.
“We also predict that the number of both younger and more senior patients seeking cosmetic procedures will continue to grow – as will the number of UK patients who will go abroad for their cosmetic surgery, despite it being a risky endeavor in underdeveloped countries. There is also little doubt that there will be even more extreme cosmetic procedures undertaken in 2015.”
