Cosmetic surgery app may create false impressions and trivialise potentially life-changing surgery, warn clinical negligence lawyers

BodyPlastika, a cosmetic surgery app, has been named one of the ten best apps by Healthcare Global. Designed by a cosmetic surgeon, BodyPlastika is the first cosmetic surgery visualisation app for the iPhone.

Created to be a more convenient way of envisioning plastic surgery results, the BodyPlastika app allows users to upload a photo of themselves and then simulate the results of a wide range of cosmetic procedures such as a nose job, liposuction or cheek implants. The user can visualise the results of their plastic surgery in seconds, without going under the knife.  Manipulated photos may then be shared on Facebook and Twitter.

Elise Bevan, a solicitor specialising in cosmetic surgery claims at Penningtons Manches says: “While the app sounds like a lot of fun, it also comes with dangers. Although the app is marketed as a tool to help you show your desired results to your plastic surgeon, I very much doubt if it can truly reflect what the outcome is likely to be and may create a false impression. On the BodyPlastika website it says: “don’t like what you see?  Just shake to undo and start over”. In reality it does not work like that and, on the occasions when things go wrong, patients are often left with devastating results. Cosmetic surgery should not be undertaken lightly and this app should not substitute the advice given by a surgeon on the anticipated results of any procedure or underplay the risks involved in cosmetic procedures.”
