Leading law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper is delighted to announce that it is supporting Women in Sport by providing two young people with an internship opportunity, offering them exposure to its specialist sports law practice.
Women in Sport is the UK’s longest standing charity advocating for women and girls in sport. This year, as part of a wider programme sponsored by the Greater London Authority (GLA), it has taken on two interns for a period of 12 months to support the delivery of projects to help create lasting positive change for women and girls in sport and society.
Towards the end of the internship, in early 2025, the interns will join Penningtons Manches Cooper’s sports law group to gain exposure to the multi-disciplinary the work the firm undertakes in the sector and beyond.
Ahead of their work experience at the firm, the partnership will also see Penningtons Manches Cooper bring together all the interns supported by the GLA, who are undertaking internships at other influential sports organisations including the English Cricket Board, England Netball, England Rugby, and the Lawn Tennis Association. In November the whole cohort will gather at the firm’s London office and will have the opportunity to meet members of the sports law practice.
Tammy Knox, partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper and a member of its sports group, comments: “For forty years, Women in Sport has worked hard to challenge the stereotypes and institutional biases that can hold back girls and women in sport and life. We are thrilled to be working with them to provide their interns with a unique insight into the world of sports law.”
She continued: “They will be able to make use of the skills and experience they have gained at Women in Sport in a new context and at the same time learn about a completely different type of career in the sports sector.”
The collaboration is aligned to Penningtons Manches Cooper’s approach to responsible business, which aims to coordinate the firm’s efforts to drive positive social and environmental change for its people and communities.
Tammy Knox added: “While we are delighted to be supporting a charity working tirelessly to drive change in sport and society, we are especially pleased to be offering this internship opportunity to two young people supported by the GLA, which is focused in this case on those from backgrounds currently underrepresented in women’s sport advocacy.”
Lisa West, Head of Policy, Partnerships and Public Affairs at Women in Sport said: "We are incredibly grateful for the support of Penningtons Manches Cooper and the GLA in helping our charity establish an internship programme. For four decades, we’ve worked to break down the barriers that continue to hold women and girls back in sport. While inequalities still exist, by equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to champion change, we are moving closer to a world where everyone can experience the joy, fulfilment, and lifelong benefits that sport has to offer.”
