Throughout June, the clinical negligence team at Penningtons Manches Cooper is championing Step up for 30, the campaign launched by Bowel Cancer UK (the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity). The campaign encourages participants to choose an activity and be active for 30 minutes each day, inside or outside, to raise money for the research and treatments needed to improve the odds of survival for people suffering from bowel cancer.
Whether you step up solo, with friends or family, on Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp or by posting on a range of other social platforms, you can enjoy your fundraising by following along to your favourite fitness videos, running, walking the dog or even doing some gardening: all you will need is 30 minutes each day. As the lockdown continues to lift slowly, and uncertainty about the future rises with it, exercise can be a wonderful way to improve mental and physical health, as it is known to boost your mood and energy levels. Exercise can also help to provide routine and structure in your day, as well as encouraging a positive attitude.
Increasing awareness of the illness and raising money to fund bowel cancer research are both vitally important because it is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the UK. Bowel cancer also has the UK’s second highest death rate amongst cancers, but it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly 98% of individuals with bowel cancer will survive for five years or more if the cancer is detected at the earliest stage, compared with the 7% survival rate for those diagnosed at the latest stage. Bowel Cancer UK supports and enables research, educates patients, the public and professionals about bowel cancer and campaigns for early diagnosis as well as the best treatment and care for all those affected.
When you sign up to join this fundraising campaign, you will become part of the Step up for 30 team. You will receive expert tips on staying active from professional athletes, learn ways to maximise your fundraising, have access to an online group to share your progress and encourage others while they encourage you. If you have any questions about the event or the registration process, please email events@bowelcanceruk.org.uk or call 020 7940 1769.
