ILO turns to Penningtons Manches for high-profile freedom of association appointment

Posted: 13/06/2014

Penningtons Manches employment partner Chris Syder has been appointed as the new employer spokesperson for the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) influential Committee on Freedom of Association (CFA).

The CFA examines complaints about violations of freedom of association and collective bargaining. These are typically brought against governments by trade unions and often consist of grievances involving multi-nationals. If the committee finds that there has been a violation of freedom of association and collective bargaining standards or principles, it issues a report through the ILO’s governing body and makes recommendations on how the situation could be remedied. Governments are subsequently requested to report on the implementation of its recommendations.

In over 50 years of work, the CFA has examined in excess of 2,300 cases. More than 60 countries on five continents have acted on its recommendations.
