Penningtons' India group hosted a half-day seminar entitled 'Accessing Skills Opportunities in India' at its London office on 20 March 2013 on behalf of the UK India Business Council (UKIBC).
Attended by around 40 educational, training and funding organisations, the seminar outlined existing approaches to skills development in poor rural and urban communities, demonstrated some innovative models being developed, and showed how UK providers can contribute their experience and expertise.
Speakers included Richard Heald, UKIBC; Ged Latham, Oldham College; and Roy Newey, chair of the UK India Skills Forum.
Rustam Dubash, head of Penningtons' India group, said: “India’s skills sector is poised for massive growth and needs to create entirely new types of skills development centres to sit at the heart of sustainable communities. These must be designed to support the skills requirements of large employers as well as their supply chains of SMEs. The seminar’s presentations and panel discussion revealed both India’s urgent need for skills training as well as the significant opportunity for UK providers.”
