The India group at Penningtons Solicitors LLP has hosted a briefing session and roundtable discussion on developing business between the UK and India for a cross-party delegation of Indian MPs, including Anurag Singh Thakur, Manicka Tagore and Shivkumar Uddasi. The Indian delegation is visiting the UK between 26 February and 2 March at the invitation of the British High Commission to foster trade links between the two countries.
Entitled 'UK-India - Connecting communities, what next?', the event, which took place at Penningtons' City office, gave the MPs the opportunity to meet representatives from leading Indian businesses such as the State Bank of India, HCL Technologies, Tata Capital and Tata Consultancy Services, as well as UK based individuals who have links to India, including British MP Virendra Sharma and Baroness Usha Parasher. The evening was co-hosted by Gateway Asia and the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The Indian MPs spoke about new opportunities in India for strategic partnership with UK companies, including the education and supply-chain sectors. They urged UK businesses to consider greater investment in India and have a long-term outlook when planning activities in the country. There was a lively range of discussions between the delegates on several issues including the impact of the Vodafone judgment on foreign direct investment into India, the 'not-for profit' model for the education sector, outbound opportunities for Indian companies in the UK, the recent Madras High Court judgment which clarified the law on overseas law firms providing foreign legal advice or advice on diverse international legal issues, and other new regulatory and legislative developments.
Rustam Dubash, who heads the India group at Penningtons, was part of the panel leading the discussions.
