Following on from the UK Government’s announcement in May 2012 that 67 countries would be subject to a UK pre-entry tuberculosis screening programme, details for the rollout of the programme in India have been announced. The Government’s decision to include India in the screening programme was as a result of World Health Organisation figures which show the country has a high frequency of the disease.
The rollout will be gradual and begin with UK settlement applications from 16 August 2012. Following that, the programme will be extended to both work and student visas.
The UKBA has stated that the screening programme will only apply to those individuals travelling to the UK for longer than six months and anyone entering the UK for six months or less will not be required to undergo testing.
