Lauren is an associate in the commercial dispute resolution team in London. She works with businesses, individuals and charities across a range of commercial, financial, regulatory and public law matters.

Her practice includes advising on commercial contracts, shareholder and banking disputes, international and cross border matters, debt recovery, tax disputes and a variety of other matters. Lauren has experience representing clients in both High Court and Court of Appeal proceedings. Lauren Kent, Associate

Lauren joined the firm in May 2022 from another London law firm where she trained, and where she qualified in 2019. Prior to training as a solicitor, Lauren worked at the Financial Ombudsman Service, resolving disputes between consumers and financial businesses and gaining experience of retail banking disputes and financial mis-selling claims. Lauren studied law with Spanish at the University of Sheffield. Her degree included one year studying Spanish law at the University of Valencia. She is a member of the London Solicitors Litigation Association.

Sophie Humphrey

Associate

Sophie is an associate in the employment team based in the Reading office. She acts for individuals and corporate clients, advising on a broad range of employment law matters.

She has experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters and has advised on Employment Tribunal claims relating to unfair dismissal, discrimination, and whistleblowing. Sophie also advises UK-based and multinational employers on a host of day-to-day matters, including drafting and updating employment contracts and policies; advising on redundancy processes, performance management, TUPE, the enforceability of restrictive covenants, whistleblowing, discrimination issues, and subject access requests; and providing practical solutions to mitigate against the risk of claims arising from such issues.

I am passionate about the ever-changing field of employment law and pride myself on delivering practical results to clients. I understand the needs of both employers and employees and I appreciate clients are not looking for us to simply quote the law, but to use our knowledge and experience to provide solutions.

Sophie Humphrey, Associate

As a member of the firm’s North America group, Sophie works closely with US and international companies on employment law and international expansion issues. She also provides training to clients on a variety of issues such as employment law updates, or refresher training on subjects such as sexual harassment and bullying. After studying law and criminology at university, Sophie joined the firm as a trainee in 2018 and qualified as a solicitor in 2020. She is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. She is also the chair of the firm’s LGBTQIA+ committee and a member of the firm’s socioeconomic group.

Associate

Bethan is an associate in the medical negligence and personal injury team in Guildford. She works with senior members of the team on a wide variety of medical negligence claims, including those relating to orthopaedic, spinal and brain injuries, as well as high value claims for catastrophic injuries from road traffic accidents.

Ben Jeffery

Associate

Ben is an associate in the housing team, specialising in supporting for-profit and not-for-profit housing providers with development and regeneration projects, working with brownfield and greenfield sites. He also has experience working with investors and developers, which he utilises to further advise housing providers.

When assisting housing associations, Ben works on developer led sites (such as turnkey or golden brick deals) or on land-led deals. He also has experience with joint ventures (contractual and SPV). Ben provides tailored advice to clients on a wide array of legal documents including land contracts, development agreements, option agreements, leases, transfers, easement and section agreements. His practical approach ensures clients are supported throughout the development process. He is experienced in advising on strategic acquisitions and managing complex negotiations, helping clients achieve their commercial objectives swiftly.

Josepha Horne

Associate

Josepha is an associate in the real estate team in London with expertise in all matters relating to planning law, development and compulsory purchase. She has experience in acting for developers, individuals and local authorities on a range of planning law matters, including complex section 106 and section 278 agreements; planning appeals and public inquiries; and the community infrastructure levy.

Amid the evolving planning landscape, Josepha has advised on off-site biodiversity net gain unit purchases and related planning obligations, planning enforcement issues and ‘subject to planning’ purchase agreements. Her work on highways issues extends to public rights of way, town and village greens and compulsory purchase orders. Josepha works with a diverse client base, including landowners, land promoters, developers, statutory undertakers and local planning authorities on large mixed use schemes. Her experience spans high rise inner city redevelopment and residential-led town expansions and smaller high value development schemes across a breadth of sectors including housebuilding, hotels, retail, town regeneration projects and the care sector.

I particularly enjoy talking through a project with a client, understanding its practical considerations to better spot and address issues. This approach gives me an opportunity to learn more about how clients operate, their commercial and practical goals and priorities, and the sector in which they operate.

Josepha Horne, Associate

With a background in real estate law, Josepha is able to approach planning and development matters with a good understanding of the difficulties and considerations that may arise during a matter from a real estate perspective. This can include title constraints, conditional contracts and variations of covenants and easements that may be required to allow a development to proceed or deal with an objection to a compulsory purchase order. At all times, Josepha brings a pragmatic approach, drawing on her knowledge of planning law, her experience of the planning system and her understanding of her client’s goals and prerogatives for a project.

Olivia Hodgson

Associate

Olivia is an associate in the private client team and works out of the Guildford office. She advises on a broad range of private client matters including the drafting of wills and trust documents, the preparation and registration of powers of attorney, and lifetime planning.

She also assists personal representatives in the administration of estates, including providing advice on ways to mitigate tax liabilities through post-death restructuring of the estate. Olivia has experience in advising a wide variety of clients, including high net worth clients, vulnerable and elderly clients, those with complex family relationships, and clients with business interests.

I pride myself on being empathetic and approachable, as well as demonstrating excellent attention to detail. I use these skills to support all my clients, particularly those going through bereavement where it is a difficult time for them and their family.

Olivia Hodgson, Associate

Olivia joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in 2018 as a trainee solicitor, and qualified as an associate in 2020 after completing a training contract at the firm over a two-year period. Prior to this, she graduated with a first-class honours degree in law and completed the LPC with distinction. She also worked as a paralegal at a family law firm, obtaining emergency injunctions for victims of domestic violence. She has been named as a recommended lawyer in the Legal 500.

Emily Hartland

Associate

Emily is an associate solicitor in the medical negligence team. She acts for clients across a range of serious injury cases, including claims against private clinicians, general practitioners and NHS trusts.

Having gained experience in helping clients come to terms with life-changing injuries, Emily has developed her expertise in gynaecological injuries, orthopaedic injuries, delayed diagnosis of cancer claims and surgical claims. She has particular expertise in claims relating to the delay in diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome but her surgical cases have involved a wider variety of injuries including bowel injury, bladder injury, infertility, sepsis and psychological injury.

Cauda equina settlement

Achieving a settlement of over £150,000 for a male following a delay in diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome. The delay resulted in injuries affecting his ability to work and manage his day-to-day life. The settlement funds have enabled him to adapt his home and access rehabilitation services.

Gallbladder surgery settlement

Achieving a significant settlement for a young woman whose bile duct was damaged during surgery to remove her gallbladder. She required repair surgery and life-long surveillance in the form of blood tests. She experienced ongoing abdominal pain and her bowel habits were adversely affected.

Appendix surgery damages

Securing a settlement for a young woman whose fertility was adversely affected following substandard appendix removal surgery. The settlement funds will enable her to obtain treatment for her ongoing symptoms and for IVF treatment if necessary.

Rectal cancer settlement

Obtaining £145,000 for an elderly woman following the delay in diagnosis of rectal cancer. She developed significant bowel symptoms and required a stoma bag. Given her age, she was unable to manage the stoma independently and needed assistance.

Complex brain injury

Assisting with a complex brain injury case resulting in a £1.8 million settlement. The gentleman’s head injury was not appropriately assessed following a fall resulting in a severe brain injury that caused mobility issues, cognitive impairment and speech issues.

BRCA gene testing claim

Advising on a complex fatal cancer claim involving the failure to offer BRCA gene testing following a breast cancer diagnosis. The woman subsequently developed ovarian cancer and sadly passed away leaving behind a young family .

Laura Hanvey

Laura is an associate in the medical negligence and personal injury team. She deals with a wide range of medical negligence claims but has a special interest in claims arising from surgical errors and the care of the elderly as well as inquest work.

Laura has experience in claims relating to pressure sores and falls leading to injuries that have occurred in either a hospital or another care setting. In addition to managing her own case load, she assists senior team members with complex high value claims. She has a strong track record in surgical cases relating to ovarian torsion and negligence during cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) as well as cases where surgical negligence or physical injury has caused a psychiatric injury. Laura is also regularly instructed to assist and support bereaved families throughout the inquest process.
