Profile

Philippa heads the personal injury team at Penningtons Manches Cooper and the clinical negligence team based in the Guildford office. She has been with the firm since training and qualified in 1998, becoming a partner in 2006. She also works out of London and has clients nationwide, particularly in the South East and West.

She and the personal injury team are recognised as leaders in their field by Chambers UK and The Legal 500 and her expertise is particularly recognised for serious brain and spinal injury and fatal accident cases. She deals with road traffic and workplace accidents as well as public liability cases.

Philippa and the clinical negligence team are also recognised as leaders in their field by the legal directories. Her practice focuses on brain and spinal injury cases - particularly Cauda Equina cases and surgical incidents - and on cases involving delayed diagnosis - particularly cancer and meningitis.

A member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Specialist Solicitor and Personal Injury Specialist Solicitor panels, Philippa is also an APIL (Association of Personal Injury Lawyers) Senior Accredited Litigator and Accredited Clinical Negligence Specialist, and is on AvMA’s recommended specialist solicitor panel. She is a contributing editor for Butterworth’s Personal Injury Litigation Service and regularly provides comment in legal journals and the press on current issues relating to personal injury and clinical negligence.

Recent work highlights

  • Achieving substantial damages for an elderly claimant who suffered serious spinal injuries rendering her tetraplegic and dependant on 24 hour care after being hit by a car while standing at the roadside.
  • Settling two £10 million+ personal injury claims involving young adults who sustained serious traumatic brain injuries in separate road traffic accidents leaving them unable to work and needing 24 hour care.
  • Winning a dependency claim for a young father and his two sons following the death of his wife from a sub arachnoid haemorrhage which the hospital failed to identify.
  • Settling a substantial claim for damages for a client with a significant delay in the diagnosis of breast cancer which had devastating consequences upon her mental health and career plans.
  • Achieving a substantial settlement for a young client left with permanent visual disability after a failure by her GP to properly assess her symptoms and refer her for investigation.
