Personal injury and clinical negligence team recognised by The Times Best Law Firms 2023, capping off year of success

Posted: 07/12/2022

Penningtons Manches Cooper’s combined personal injury and clinical negligence team has been commended in The Times Best Law Firms 2023, in recognition of the department’s high quality of work.

The list highlights the top legal practices in England and Wales. Inclusion in these rankings is particularly special, as they are based solely on the votes and recommendations of fellow lawyers. This is the latest success for the team in 2022, following on from a number of recent achievements.

Previously in the year, the team was reaccredited by the head injury charity Headway and the Brain Injury Group. Headway is a UK-wide charity that provides vital support and information for those who have suffered a brain injury, while the Brain Injury Group was established as a national network of dedicated brain injury lawyers and other specialist services.

In addition, several members of the team were either reaccredited, or accredited for the first time, by the Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) specialist solicitors panel, The Law Society, and/or the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL). The majority of the senior members on the team are now accredited on one or more of these specialist panels.

All of these accreditations require demonstration of sufficient expertise in the relevant areas across the team and are regularly reviewed.

The team was also delighted to be recognised again as leaders in their field by the two main UK legal directories, Chambers UK and The Legal 500. These directories draw on client testimonials, endorsements from fellow lawyers, and feedback from third-party experts to create a comprehensive list of the best firms and lawyers throughout the country.

In Chambers UK, the ‘distinguished’ clinical negligence and ‘leading’ personal injury teams were ranked in the top tier, with a client commenting ‘I cannot speak highly enough of the level of expertise shown by the team at Penningtons’. The directory also highlighted the team’s strength in depth, with two associates ranked for personal injury in London, and three ranked in the South, demonstrating capabilities at all levels.

In The Legal 500, the team was also ranked in the top band, and described as an ‘exceptional team… well trained, diligent, intelligent, have excellent client handling skills… Some of the best of the best.’ Two partners were singled out as leading practitioners in the field, with another listed as a ‘next generation partner’.

Philippa Luscombe, partner in the personal injury and clinical negligence team, comments: “We are very proud of our team and consider that the various recognitions given to us this year reflect the high-quality reputation that we have within these areas of work – with recognition from clients, lawyers, professional contacts and charities. Our team is one of the largest clinical negligence practices in the country and our personal injury lawyers are particularly highly regarded for their specialist catastrophic injury work, so it is nice to see the recognition and respect that we have been given.

“We deal with a broad spectrum of clinical negligence and personal injury claims and now have over 50 specialist solicitors working on a variety of cases from those involving elderly care and hospital falls, to life changing road traffic and workplace accidents, to injuries arising from childbirth, delays in diagnosis and complex surgery.”
