Personal injury specialists demonstrate strength in depth in a series of newly settled compensation claims

The personal injury team at Penningtons Manches LLP has reached a number of settlements over the past four weeks, securing compensation for victims in a wide variety of accidents. Recent highlights include:

  • Concluding a claim on behalf of a cyclist who was travelling on his morning commute. Although he was wearing a cycle helmet and the appropriate cycle clothing, he was hit by the large wing mirror of a transit vehicle which had been travelling behind him at a significant speed. He was knocked off his bicycle and suffered an open fracture to his right humerus requiring surgery. In addition to this, he suffered liver and spleen lacerations, a right kidney hematoma and five rib fractures. He was admitted to A&E and remained in intensive care for six days. Liability was admitted early on. Thankfully, due to his timely and appropriate treatment, the cyclist made a  complete recovery within a year. Penningtons Manches has settled the claim for £24,500.
  • Obtaining over £16,000 in damages for a client who was injured at work. Whilst moving around the building, she tripped on the edge of the top step of an internal staircase and fell. It transpired that the stair grip on the top step was sticking up and was therefore hazardous. The woman was unable to reach the hand rail to steady herself and as a result she fell all the way down the stairs. She sustained fractures of the nasal bone which went on to lead to a reduction in the nasal airway. In addition, she suffered multiple facial lacerations and cosmetic scarring.
  • Reaching a settlement on a heavily disputed road traffic accident case. The firm’s client was cycling home, along a main road, when he was hit by a motor vehicle that was approaching from behind. He was knocked unconscious at the scene. Emergency services were called and he was immediately taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken scapula, three broken ribs, fractures to the vertebrae, a punctured lung and various lacerations and bruising. The defendant argued against liability but, following thorough investigations, the personal injury team successfully concluded the case in his favour for the sum of £28,500.

Charlene McAuliffe, an associate in Penningtons Manches’ personal injury team who was involved with these settlements, said: “Our team is known for its experience in advising on a range of cases, including road traffic accidents, incidents at work and claims against local authorities. We have particular expertise in handling complex and multiple injury claims and cases where liability issues are contested or there are multiple potential defendants.

"It is important that injured individuals seek appropriate legal advice as many claimants encounter resistance from defendant representatives if they try to deal with them directly. In these recent cases, our clients all suffered severe injuries and significant financial losses. While we cannot take away the memories of these events, we hope that the compensation obtained can go some way to helping them move forward.”
