Indesit, Hotpoint and Creda tumble dryers pose risk of fire

Posted: 25/11/2015

Indesit, a manufacturer of domestic appliances and owner of the Hotpoint and Creda brands, has written to notify its customers that many of its tumble dryers that were manufactured and sold between April 2004 and October 2015 are being recalled.

The issue with the machines is that excess fluff, which is not manually removed by the customer, could catch on the heating element in the machine, causing a fire. Many air vented dryers and condensing dryers sold under the Hotpoint, Indesit and Creda brands are affected.

Following Whirlpool's acquisition of the Hotpoint and Indesit brands and customers, anyone who has purchased air vented or condensing dryers from one of these brands in the past 10 years is warned not to use their machines unattended, and is advised to check on the Hotpoint website whether their specific model is affected. Customers can follow this link.

A spokesperson for the company said: “These products were marketed in the UK and a number of other countries over the past 11 years… We estimate that a significant number of units will be affected, but at this stage, we cannot speculate regarding the specific figure”.

Arran Macleod, a Penningtons Manches personal injury lawyer who deals with product liability claims for injured consumers, said: “Washing machines and tumble dryers are fundamental appliances in most households. Consumers place their utmost faith in the safety of these machines and it is worrying that Hotpoint is not even able to speculate how many households may be affected. What is also of concern is that the investigations into the safety of Indesit’s machines began in October 2014 and it is possible that there has been knowledge of this problem for some time.

“Manufacturers are under a duty of strict liability where customers suffer injury as a result of a defective product. We deal regularly with consumers who have been injured and would be happy to speak with anyone who may be considering a claim.”
