Posted: 21/09/2015

Fujitsu, the Japanese multinational technology company, has issued a voluntary product recall notice for certain battery packs used in its notebook computers.

The battery packs in question are manufactured by Panasonic and have been found to be a potential fire hazard as they may ignite and cause a fire.

Fujitsu has voluntarily recalled affected battery packs and will replace them for free.

Affected products

The affected battery packs were shipped with the following specific Fujitsu laptop models:

-          Celsius H720/H730

-          Lifebook E751, E752, E781, E782

-          Lifebook P701, P702, P770, P771, P772

-          Lifebook P8110

-          Lifebook S710, S751, S751, S760, S761, S762, S781, S782, S792

-          Lifebook T580.

Fujitsu has advised customers that they will be able to identify whether they have an affected battery pack by checking the serial number beneath the barcode on the battery pack itself.

For any customers who own and use a Fujitsu laptop which is affected by the potentially hazardous battery pack, Fujitsu advises the immediate removal of the affected battery pack.  Customer should contact Fujitsu for a replacement. Arran Macleod, a member of the product liability team at Penningtons Manches, said: “Overheated and spontaneously igniting battery packs could lead to disastrous consequences. Due to the high demand for newer and more exciting technology, it often seems that manufacturers rush to bring a new product to the customer.

Due to the increasing rate at which customers purchase technology, it is more important than ever that all technology is tested rigorously. This is particularly true for companies that rely on other manufacturers to provide parts of their technology, such as Fujitsu and Panasonic.
