Why the nose job is the most popular plastic surgery procedure?

Recent statistics have shown a dramatic rise in the number of cosmetic procedures, with rhinoplasty - the nose job - reigning supreme. Reports show that there has been a significant increase in demand for rhinoplasty surgery since summer 2013, while celebrity trends probably contribute to the increased interest in the procedure. Elise Bevan, a solicitor specialising in cosmetic surgery at Penningtons Manches, explains some of the other reasons why this procedure is so prevalent.

“The rhinoplasty procedure is one of the most popular cosmetic enhancement procedures for both men and women. As the nose is the most visible facial feature, undergoing even a small, subtle change can make all the difference to improving someone’s appearance. The reasons for getting a nose job are not always cosmetic as a rhinoplasty can also improve the patient’s nasal function.

“A rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose.  It can change the shape of the tip or bridge. It can reduce the distance between the nostrils and it can change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. These procedures are usually always performed under general anaesthetic which carries its own risks. Most patients report that the operation is surprisingly painless but it generally takes three to six months for the swelling to completely subside and the appearance of the new nose to settle down.

“The need for procedures such as rhinoplasty is not always to achieve perfection. But, whatever the reason, it is important to remember that the results are permanent and perfection cannot be guaranteed. Patients should ask themselves precisely why they are considering the procedure. If the objective of the nose reshaping surgery is to make the nose more acceptable in the eyes of the patient, it is essential that they are completely certain about just what it is about the nose that is of concern and what the outcome is likely to be before undergoing surgery.”
