Child Safety Week is an annual campaign run by the Child Accident Prevention Trust to raise awareness of the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented. The trust provides a range of resources to help practitioners run local activities and events and promote safety messages in a fun and engaging way. Many organisations get involved focusing on various aspects of child safety and providing education and information to adults and children in various formats and through events at schools and public events.

This year Child Safety week is 23-29 June 2014 and the charity has chosen a Morning Mayhem theme to focus on accidents that are more likely to happen during the morning rush at home and during the journey to school. The campaign will also cover all topics involving child safety. For example, this year Newcastle Hospitals Community Health team will be running events aimed at promoting awareness of the risks of accidental poisoning.

Philippa Luscombe, partner in the personal injury team at Penningtons Manches LLP, said: “Accidents involving children are always upsetting and can often have devastating consequences – particularly those involving road accidents and burns. Anything that focuses the minds of both adults and children on key safety messages has got to be positive and it is great to see the Child Accident Prevention Trust doing such good work again this year. Hopefully lots of organisations will get involved and the week will have some positive outcomes. The focus on ‘morning mayhem’ is an interesting one – and we particularly hope that motorists will be aware of the campaign and the need to be on alert in the mornings as children are making their way to school.”
