Spinal Injury Awareness Day highlights the important role of charities

Posted: 15/05/2012

It is estimated that every year 1,200 people experience the devastating effect that a spinal cord injury causes.

On Friday 18 May 2012, it will be Spinal Injuries Awareness Day. This is aimed at helping raise awareness of the impact of a spinal cord injury and highlights the invaluable work of the spinal cord injury charities and other associated organisations throughout the UK which help people paralysed as a result of a broken neck or back.

Spinal Injuries Awareness Day is coordinated by Spinal Injuries Together (SIT) – Aspire, Backup, Spinal Research and Spinal Injuries Scotland. All these charities do a number of things to assist and provide the necessary support and in some cases financial assistance to those living with a spinal cord injury so that they can lead fulfilled and independent lives.

It is important that people are made aware of the help available so that they do not miss out on often life changing assistance and resources. The difference that specialist support can make in enabling people to return to their pre-accident lives is enormous.

This ranges from knowledge and assistance with sourcing specialist medical and nursing care to guidance on accommodation, equipment, support groups, technology advances and sporting and leisure activities. In cases where the spinal cord injury results from negligence through an accident or substandard medical care, ensuring those pursuing a third party have access to specialist assistance from experts who deal with claims on a regular basis is key. Proper resources and rehabilitation will provide the best possible chance of function and independence in the future.
