Penningtons lawyers help the fight against hunger in Philadelphia

Joanne Vengadesan and Victoria Wood from the Basingstoke and Godalming offices of Penningtons Solicitors LLP were part of the 11th Multilaw Academy, held this year in Philadelphia, USA.

The Multilaw Academy is an intensive training programme in international lawyering for young lawyers. The week-long event took place between 5 and 11 August and drew young lawyers from across the globe.

As part of a new pro bono mission by Multilaw lawyers to demonstrate their social responsibility in the countries they serve and visit, participants were asked to give hands-on help at the Community Food Center of local charity Philabundance, an organisation dedicated to helping feed the hungry in the greater Philadelphia area. All 16 delegates from 11 countries along with the course organisers took an afternoon out of their study time to take part.

Said Joanne: “The opportunity to do pro bono work with the other delegates was rewarding and memorable. The services we provided were so meaningful: we were not just handing out food but helping people learn to eat better and improve their ways of living.”

At the end of an afternoon of hard work, Multilaw was also delighted to hand over a cheque for $1,500 to further assist Philabundance in its good work.
