Damian Green outlines Government plans for a 'selective' immigration system

Posted: 03/02/2012

Immigration Minister Damian Green has reinforced the Government's plans to create a selective and sustainable immigration system which encourages the brightest and best to come to the UK.

Speaking at the Policy Exchange on 2 February, Mr Green argued that it wasn't just important to focus on the number of migrants coming to the UK but also their ability to add to the quality of life here.

The introduction in recent months of the more selective routes for investors, entrepreneurs and those individuals with exceptional talent looks to have set a precedent, with the Immigration Minister saying that the points based system should be replaced by a system which is 'contribution based' and which checks the ability of migrants to effectively enhance the quality of life in the UK. He also confirmed the introduction of a new route for international graduate entrepreneurs, enabling overseas students who have demonstrated entrepreneurial flair while under supervision at a UK university to remain in the country to develop their ideas further.
