Clearing the hurdles for you and your employees to be Olympic winners

Posted: 01/03/2012

Hotels and leisure sector employers should start discussions with their employees who are volunteering during the 2012 Games to manage expectations and minimise the impact on workplace productivity. Some of the key HR issues include the management of:

  • annual leave to participate in the Games or to go abroad;
  • leave requests from employees who wish to volunteer at the Games;
  • time off work to watch the Games in the workplace;
  • commuting to work, flexible working and home working;
  • disciplinary issues relating to punctuality, watching the Games on mobile phones/PCs at work without approval, absence without authorised leave, malingering and drunken behaviour;
  • bullying and harassment at work or via social media as a result of employees supporting different teams, and
  • receipt/offer of Olympic events tickets and the Bribery Act 2010.

It would be prudent to have a clear policy to deal with the above issues and communicate this to all your staff.
