Claim won for young woman with life-changing injuries caused by unnecessary use of vaginal mesh

We recently acted for a young woman who suffered life-changing injuries following the unnecessary surgical insertion of mesh to treat stress incontinence. The trust admitted liability after the claimant developed mesh erosion leading to the removal of the eroded part of the mesh and urinary problems including frequency, urgency and nocturia. She subsequently required future treatment including bladder physiotherapy and Botox.

The claim was one of many involving the same consultant at a local hospital who recommended unnecessary vaginal mesh surgery. As with most of these cases, conservative management of the problems would have been appropriate and successful. Instead, against the NICE Excellence Guidelines, the consultant recommended extensive major surgery that had long-term consequences for the patient.

The damages recovered included compensation for the cost of the future treatment that was likely to be required as she will suffer life-changing injuries for some years to come.
