Gynaecology and pregnancy claims
We settled a claim for a client who had unnecessary surgery due to incorrect advice about her risks of developing cancer, compounded by significant post operative issues.
We have represented a group of claimants in their clinical negligence claims against consultant colorectal surgeon, Mr Anthony Dixon.
The claimant was reviewed at her GP surgery after an episode of vaginal bleeding. It was noted that this was a ‘one off episode’. A cervical smear and a high vaginal swab were performed to exclude any abnormality.

Failure to suspect ectopic pregnancy
Our client had already had an ectopic pregnancy as a result of which she had lost one of her Fallopian tubes. She later attended a locum GP at her usual surgery, complaining of abdominal pain.
We secured compensation of £14,000 for a 26 year old woman in respect of the physical and emotional distress she suffered as a result of complications during the birth of her first child.
The claimant in this case had undergone laparoscopic surgery to terminate an ectopic pregnancy at an NHS hospital. She was told that the procedure had been fully successful but continued to feel unwell. On the second day after surgery, she went back to the hospital for tests which confirmed that she was still pregnant. She was informed that she needed a further procedure, but the hospital could not guarantee the operation would be carried out that day or who the surgeon would be.

Failure to consider available alternatives to hysterectomy and loss of kidney function as a result
Our client underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy after her treating gynaecologist failed to explore properly other less invasive treatment options for her symptoms.
Our client, K, underwent a caesarean section following complications during labour. Prior to the caesarean section, the defendant negligently failed to undertake a further examination that would have shown that a straightforward instrumental delivery would be possible.
We are currently investigating the circumstances in which a first time mother had an extremely difficult pregnancy, becoming very large and quite unwell in her last trimester. She experienced difficulty breathing, reduced mobility as a result of swelling in her legs and feet, and a huge amount of stress. She had shared care from her GP, her midwife and her consultant and all three simply reassured her that she was having a large baby and she should try not to worry.
