Sophie Spencer

Associate

Sophie is an associate in the private client team based in Guildford. She deals with a broad range of private client matters including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, estate administration and inheritance tax planning. Sophie has a particular interest in the administration of complex and contentious estates.

In addition, she is part of the specialist team focusing on UK and international tax and succession planning, bringing particular expertise to help clients plan for passing on their wealth. Sophie is building on her experience of working closely with clients in the business and agricultural sectors, and is also keenly involved in developing digital asset planning strategies.

My focus is on providing strategic advice that’s tailored to each client’s unique needs and circumstances. I work closely with colleagues and trusted third-party professionals to deliver a service that adds value and helps achieve our clients’ goals. I take a thoughtful, thorough approach while ensuring we maintain the human ethos that underpins everything we do.

Sophie Spencer, Associate

Prior to qualifying, Sophie graduated from the University of Surrey with a first-class honours degree in law and was awarded the head of law school prize for ‘best overall performance’. She completed her LPC LLM with distinction at the University of Law in Guildford and undertook a placement year working with high-net-worth individuals and advising on succession planning and tax mitigation strategies. Sophie joined the firm in 2023, having qualified as a solicitor in March 2022 following her successful training contract at another leading Legal 500 law firm based in Surrey and the Thames Valley.

Historic investigations

Investigating historic trust and business arrangements in order to ascertain the true ownership of assets and advising on the tax implications upon the death of a purported owner.

High value estates

Assisting with the administration of high value and complex estates, including advising on will trusts and the succession planning options.

Suspected financial abuse

Dealing with attorneys suspected of financial abuse and seeking to recover funds for the residuary beneficiaries of an estate.

Longstanding appointment

Acting in the administration of a long-standing client’s estate whose family have been clients of the firm for many generations. The estate included significant interests in several family farming businesses, which remain ongoing.

Estate planning in shipping

Advising high-net-worth clients in the shipping industry on personal and business estate planning options, including the consideration of trusts for asset protection and tax efficient sharing of intergenerational wealth.

International estate administration

Representing the administrators of an estate where the deceased, domiciled in Singapore, had died abroad, leaving no will and only minors entitled to his estate, with assets in the UK and overseas.
