James Sedgley

Senior associate

James is a senior associate in the private client team, working in London and Basingstoke. He acts for individuals, trustees and families in a wide range of domestic and international tax and succession matters. This work includes regularly advising individuals and families on the succession of family wealth through the use of tax efficient wills, lifetime gifts and the creation of trusts or corporate asset holding entities.

James administers a number of complex family trusts and acts for several farming clients and family business owners, advising on succession and estate planning. He also advises international clients on residence and domicile issues and is experienced in probate administration of complex estates, often including family businesses and international elements.

I pride myself on helping clients to navigate the often complex area of tax and estate planning. My goal is to see them deliver their objectives for the next generations of their family.

To provide a seamless service to clients, James works closely with other teams within Penningtons Manches Cooper, including the family, corporate and property teams. His aim is to be approachable and down to earth, providing complex advice in a personable and understandable manner.

James trained at Penningtons Manches Cooper and qualified into the private client team in 2010. He is a full member of STEP, the world’s leading organization for private wealth professionals, and has completed the STEP Diploma in Advising International Clients in UK Tax.

Substantial farming estate

Administering a substantial farming estate which included assets that qualify for agricultural and business property relief for inheritance tax.

Tax efficient succession

Advising trustees and a family that spanned three generations of beneficiaries on the tax efficient succession and re-structuring of a substantial estate held in trust.

Tax efficient gifting

Advising a client in connection with inheritance tax efficient gifting of assets, including gifts of normal expenditure out of income.

Multi-jurisdictional financial settlement

Providing capital gains tax and inheritance tax mitigation advice in connection with a multi-jurisdictional financial settlement following a client’s divorce.

Business property relief

Negotiating the taxation of a complex estate with HMRC to achieve the best outcome for the client’s assets that benefited from business property relief.
