Global Talent visa launches

Posted: 19/02/2020

From 20 February 2020, the Global Talent visa replaces the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa. This category is for talented and promising individuals in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, humanities, digital technology, and arts and culture (including film and television, fashion design and architecture).

In order to apply under this category, individuals will require an endorsement from an approved endorsing body. The endorsing bodies include:

  • The Royal Society;
  • The British Academy;
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering;
  • Tech Nation;
  • Arts Council England; and
  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

Those endorsed in the fields of science, engineering, humanities and medicine under the new visa scheme will be able to apply for settlement after three years while those in the other fields will be able to apply for settlement after three years if endorsed under talent and after five years if endorsed under promise.

Researchers in certain fields and their dependants will be exempt from the 180-day residence requirements for settlement if the absence relates to work overseas.
