Managing associate

Dr Amanda Easey is a managing associate in the intellectual property team in London. She specialises in advising clients operating in technically complex fields. Her work encompasses patent litigation, regulatory advice and freedom to operate opinions.

She also has experience in advising on a variety of related legal issues, including patent licensing and royalty disputes and drafting commercial agreements. Amanda has represented clients in the Patents Court (a specialised division of the Business and Property Courts in England and Wales) and at appellate level. She has particular expertise in advising on launch strategies for orphan medicines. Her work in this sector has encompassed questions relating to exclusivity and complex product labelling strategies relating to potentially overlapping disease classifications and therapeutic indications.

I enjoy working with regulatory specialists to identify and resolve complicated questions about the scope of orphan drug exclusivities. This allows me to work on challenging questions at the intersection between medicine and law, enabling me to deploy my medical knowledge and experience to give practical answers to my clients.

Amanda Easey, Managing associate

Amanda worked as a medical doctor before retraining as a solicitor at a multinational law firm in 2005. She worked at a specialist IP law firm for over 12 years before joining Penningtons Manches Cooper in 2022. Her medical background and experience have proved advantageous to many of her clients in the life sciences sector, particularly those interested in launching pharmaceuticals and biosimilar medicines onto the UK and European markets. She has advised on patent issues in a diverse range of therapy areas, including ophthalmology, oncology, audiology, haematology, rheumatology and women’s health.

Representing a European manufacturer and supplier of generic pharmaceutical products and their UK distributor in litigation to obtain damages for exclusion from the UK market following the grant of an interim injunction in a patent case.

Liz Cardy

Managing associate

Liz is a managing associate in the employment team based in the Guildford office. She advises on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious employment law matters for both employer and employee clients.

Her experience includes complex discrimination and unfair dismissal claims; settlement agreements; disciplinary, capability and grievance procedures; redundancy procedures and corporate restructuring; advising clients on employment issues in sale and purchase agreements; drafting of and advising on personnel and policy documents; and TUPE transfers.

Liz Cardy, Managing associate

She is also experienced in employment tribunal work and settling disputes – and is described as ‘an astute and tenacious negotiator’.

 Liz is recognised by Chambers UK and has been identified as a leading associate by the Legal 500. She is a regular author of articles and bulletins on current employment law issues and also provides clients with in-house training. She joined the firm as a trainee and qualified in 2007.

Assisting a client in defending claims of unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal and race discrimination, with the Employment Tribunal dismissing the matter prior to the final hearing.

Advising an international client in relation to all of their day-to-day employment law requirements, including dealing with flexible working requests, negotiating exit terms with senior management, and assisting with a significant restructuring exercise.

Substantial settlement

Acting for an executive employee whose employment had been terminated in circumstances where they were unable to bring an ordinary claim of unfair dismissal and negotiating a substantial settlement without the need to issue tribunal proceedings.

Emma Beeson

Managing associate

Emma is a managing associate in the medical negligence team. She has particular expertise in gynaecology and urogynaecology, leading the firm’s gynaecology team. Emma also heads up the firm’s maternal injury team and has specialist knowledge of maternal death claims.

Praised by clients and colleagues for being able to manage cases involving sensitive issues for both men and women with care and discretion, Emma is noted for her approachable nature. She is passionate about raising awareness of issues relating to women’s health whilst also being an advocate for issues of men’s health often considered to be taboo. She is a member of the firm’s gender committee and has spoken at a number of events on issues of women’s health, such as ‘Women of the World’ in London. Emma represents families looking to investigate the death of a loved one and has experience of representing clients at inquests, helping them to participate in the process and supporting them throughout.

I am passionate about what I do and strive to support my clients in the best way possible through what can sometimes be a challenging and upsetting process. It is important to me that their cases are handled sensitively and with compassion.

Emma Beeson, Managing associate

After joining the firm as a trainee, Emma qualified into the medical negligence team in 2013. She is a member of the AvMA Specialist Clinical Negligence Panel and won the AvMA/PIC Rising Clinical Negligence Star Award in 2018. She is based in Basingstoke but acts for clients throughout the country and is able to see them in the firm’s Basingstoke, Reading, Oxford, London and Birmingham offices.

Claire Austen

Managing associate

Claire Austen is a senior associate (FCILEx) in the private client and tax team based in the Guildford office. She has experience of a wide range of complex private client work with particular expertise in estate administration, both where the deceased has left a will and on an intestacy.

She provides advice on ways to mitigate inheritance tax liabilities through post-death restructuring of an estate and the use of will trusts. Claire assists clients regarding the preparation of wills, inheritance tax planning, the preparation of lasting powers of attorney, the registration of enduring powers of attorney, acting as an attorney under a power of attorney, and the creation and administration of trusts. Claire also advises overseas clients with assets in the UK, including the preparation of wills relating to UK assets and the administration of UK estates after death.

Advising clients and negotiating with HMRC to mitigate substantial inheritance tax liabilities including date of death valuations of property and personal chattels, and possible lifetime gifts where HMRC are seeking to impose additional inheritance tax.

Advising clients following an increase in the value of assets held within an estate, including the distribution of the asset between beneficiaries to ensure that the beneficiaries’ annual allowances can be offset against any gain.

Oliver Cooke

Managing associate

Oliver is a managing associate in the commercial dispute resolution team in London. With experience in civil, criminal, and regulatory law, he frequently works on matters where these fields converge. As such, Oliver’s practice focuses on advising companies and individuals in complex commercial civil fraud disputes as well as in internal, law enforcement, and regulator-led investigations.

Advising clients across a wide range of industries and sectors, many of Oliver’s cases have a multi-jurisdictional aspect. He has experience acting on matters involving the US, China, and various African, European and offshore territories. In respect of law enforcement and regulator-led actions, Oliver has acted in matters conducted by the Serious Fraud Office, Financial Conduct Authority, and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. He has also acted as part of cross-border teams in cases involving the US Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, and other foreign national law enforcement and regulatory bodies.

Oliver Cooke, Managing associate
