Johan is Head of our Singapore office. He is the primary contact for the Singapore Emergency Response team and he has extensive experience investigating collisions, groundings, fires, total loss claims and dealing with the full range of issues, including salvage, oil pollution, general average, limitation and forum shopping battles arising from maritime casualties.

Aside from casualty related work, Johan advises regularly on dry shipping matters relating to contractual and coverage issues, including cargo contamination claims, speed and consumption and marine policy disputes. He has substantial experience handling arbitration proceedings in Singapore, Hong Kong and London, and he receives instructions from various container lines, tanker owners and operators as well as charterers, P&I clubs and other insurers.

Johan has been highlighted by Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Chambers Asia and Chambers Global and is “praised by interviewees for his ability to work across various jurisdictions and legal cultures”. Clients have also commented that "he manages his cases in an exemplary fashion, fights hard and does it with respect and vigour".

Recent work highlights

  • Acting for owners and operators of a sand dredger following a collision with a tanker vessel in the Singapore Traffic Separation Scheme in September 2017, which involved dealing with all aspects of the investigation, liaising with the Singapore authorities, coordinating the search and rescue efforts to locate the missing crew members, bunker pollution clean-up and removal of the wreck.
  • Acting for owners of a container vessel following a collision with a bulk carrier off Singapore in March 2017. Worked with local counsel to establish a limitation fund in Singapore and dealt with all aspects of liability and quantum arising from the collision.
  • Acting for a major logistics company following a dispute arising under a freight forwarding contract to provide multimodal transportation services to facilitate the delivery of materials and equipment for the construction of a large-scale fertilizer plant in East Malaysia.
