William is a Senior Solicitor in the shipping group in the London office specialising in shipping and insurance litigation. He is regularly instructed by ship owners, ship operators, charterers, commodity traders and oil majors in relation to the full range of charterparty claims, bill of lading claims, cargo damage claims, claims under the Inter Club Agreement, and general average claims. William is also able to advise on contracts for the sale of goods and insurance contracts.

On the casualty side, he is experienced in advising ship owners and their P&I insurers on the legal and practical issues that arise following a casualty at sea, including collisions, groundings and fires.

William joined Thomas Cooper in September 2010 and worked in the firm’s Piraeus office in 2011.


Recent work highlights

  • Defending a container line in the defence of over 130 cargo claims and counterclaiming for GA contributions following a major fire incident at a German port.
  • Obtaining anti-suit injunctions against foreign cargo interests for pursuing claims for cargo damage in breach of the law and jurisdiction clauses in the contracts of carriage.
  • Acting for owners and their P&I Club on cargo claims and collision liability claims following a collision in the Chittagong outer anchorage.
  • Advising an individual who had been served with a Norwich Pharmacal injunction.
