Richard manages the Thames Valley real estate team and leads the firm’s environmental and planning law practice. He is ranked a leading individual (Band 1) in The Legal 500 and in Chambers UK 2014 as a notable practitioner in environmental law. He advises businesses and organisations in the technology, energy, social housing, chemicals, waste and retail sectors. His clients include EDF Energy, The University of Oxford, European Space Agency, Grundon Waste Management and Berendsen. His commercial property experience extends to corporate relocations, developments and restructuring of offices, distribution centres, housing schemes, brownfield sites, landfills, recycling centres, renewable energy projects, laboratories and manufacturing facilities.

Richard handles a wide range of environmental and planning law issues including contaminated land liabilities, legal compliance, landfill and waste management, environmental impact assessment, planning policy, development control, planning agreements and planning enforcement. He is a member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CWIM), the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA) and is on the panel of the Environmental Law Foundation.

  • Leading the legal aspects of a case to secure significant reduction in landfill tax liability for Brunner Mond, British Salt and Ineos Chlor Enterprises.
  • Advising Berendsen/Davis Group plc on environmental liability issues arising from contractual indemnities, warranties, access agreements for environmental surveys in connection with a series of commercial property acquisitions and brownfield land disposals.
  • Acting for a social housing provider on the set up and lease negotiations of a mixed use development scheme in Wiltshire.
  • Structuring option, leases and overage payment arrangements for the proposed reclamation and development for housing, commercial and leisure uses of a 60 acre waste lagoon in Cheshire involving negotiations with the Environmental Agency.
  • Advising the European Space Agency on the development of its new UK headquarters at Harwell Science Park in Oxfordshire.
