Francis is a senior associate in the marine, trade and energy team in the London office, specialising in commodities, shipping and aviation disputes. He has acted in international arbitrations under LCIA and LMAA rules and in litigation at the Commercial Court in London. His clients include trading companies, financial institutions, insurers, charterers and ship owners.

Francis’ predominantly contentious practice has a sector focus on commodities (both hard and soft), trade finance, energy and natural resources, aviation and shipping (wet, dry and construction).

Before he joined Penningtons Manches Cooper in 2020, Francis worked at a well-regarded City of London shipping firm. Previously, he has also acted in a senior role in the UK Government, managing disputes up to Supreme Court level and subsequently advising on a state parliament inquiry in Melbourne, Australia.

  • Acting in defence of Commercial Court claims in excess of US$1 billion arising from a mining project.
  • Advising a claimant trading company in LCIA arbitration proceedings and obtaining an award in excess of US$7 million.
  • Representing a multi-billion dollar organisation in defence of Commercial Court litigation concerning the construction of a drillship.
  • Acting for a major shipping line in defence of High Court claims for US$30 million arising from disputes under a road haulage contract.
