Vontouring - or Protégé Intima as it is officially known - is the latest craze when it comes to improving the appearance of the vagina. Vontouring is a new form of vaginal contouring which mimics the effects of a labiaplasty using non-surgical techniques. The device used, which has just received FDA approval, looks like a pen and works by using thermal energy to stimulate collagen production which causes the skin to become plumper and tighter, reducing the shape and size of prominent or low-hanging labia. This is coupled with unique cooling technology to ensure that the process is comfortable and convenient and that the delicate skin on and around the labia remains intact. The treatment is pain-free and requires no recovery time.

The scientists behind the treatment claim that it can boost the sensitivity of the genital area as well as improving the appearance of the vagina. When surveyed, 80% of patients reported 'moderate to excellent' results in the appearance of their labia, and 60% agreed that there was a 'moderate to excellent' impact on their sexual sensation and, consequently, their libido. Protégé Intima is available nationwide, costs around £200 per session and around four sessions are recommended to see optimum results.

Over the last couple of years, medical procedures such as labiaplasty and vaginaplasty have been increasing in popularity. From 2013 to 2014, there was a 44% increase in such procedures according to the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery.

Elise Bevan, a solicitor in the clinical negligence team at Penningtons Manches, comments: “Cosmetic surgeons say this treatment will increase the flexibility of the labia majora and minora and provide 'significant and long-lasting improvement of sexual satisfaction'. Vontouring is being marketed as a cheaper, non-surgical alternative to labiaplasty and is supposedly a less invasive form of vaginal rejuvenation that will give you plumper, firmer vaginal lips and increased sensation as long as you're ready to put your vagina at the mercy of 'intensive heating'.

“Side effects are less of a concern compared to actual surgery but burning inside of the vagina, which can arise due to misapplication of the device, is a very real risk of vontouring. As there is, as yet, no evidence that vaginal contouring can improve sexual function, our view is that, if you didn’t think your vagina was a problem before you heard about this procedure, then it isn’t a problem.”
