Migration Advisory Committee advises on reduction in roles on shortage occupation list

Posted: 15/02/2013

The latest report from The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has recommended that the shortage occupation list should cover a smaller proportion of the UK labour market. The Committee advised that the list should be reduced to 180,000 employees which makes up less than one per cent of the total UK workforce. Recommendations include increasing the number of engineering jobs on the list while reducing the number of health sector positions. This is mainly due to the UK’s investment in training in the healthcare sector over the last few years, with the aim of ‘up-skilling’ domestic workers.

Currently, only one in 400 of all immigrants in the UK takes up jobs on the shortage occupation list.
