International car manufacturer Vauxhall recalls unsafe Zafira B models

Leading car manufacturer Vauxhall has issued a recall of 220,000 of its Zafira B model cars following numerous reports that they are overheating, resulting in fires behind the glove box. 

Vauxhall initially sent out an alert to the problem to inform customers but, after an urgent investigation, has now issued a full recall. 

The report was brought to Vauxhall’s attention by three mothers whose Zafiras burst into flames while their children were in the cars. Now, more than 130 motorists have alerted Vauxhall to potential problems. A Facebook group set up by Zafira owners to alert other drivers has attracted 12,000 members. 

Around 280,000 Zafira B models were manufactured between 2005 and 2014. Over 220,000 are believed still to be on the road and the owners will be contacted from 12 November 2015 for a full inspection and repair of their cars. In the meantime, Vauxhall advises owners of these cars not to use the heating or air conditioning systems. 

Arran Macleod, a Penningtons Manches personal injury lawyer who deals with product liability claims for injured consumers, said: “This is worrying news. Many owners of Zafira cars have young families and the possibility that the vehicles could spontaneously combust is unacceptable. 

“Manufacturers are under a duty of strict liability where customers suffer injury through a defective product. Anyone who has been injured as a result of this defect may have a claim for compensation and should get in touch to discuss their options.”
