Dental nurse struck off for performing face lift on friend

Posted: 16/02/2016

A dental nurse from Bradford has been struck off after being found to have performed a surgical face lift on a friend at her home despite having no relevant qualifications.

It has been reported that Adele Royston had planned the operation for two years before carrying out the procedure on her friend in February 2014. The face lift procedure involved putting her friend under local anaesthetic before cutting into her face in two places to tighten the skin putting the patient at significant risk of problems and complications. Ms Royston also admitted that she had had the anaesthetic for two years before carrying out the operation, potentially putting the patient at further risk as it might have been out of date.

Ms Royston was reported to her employers by a colleague, who had found out what she had done, for carrying out the operation without the relevant and necessary qualifications. She was sacked for gross misconduct. She has subsequently been struck off the dental register after the General Dental Council’s professional conduct committee said her actions were of the “utmost seriousness” and “the facts it has found proved amount to misconduct”.

Amy Milner, a solicitor in the cosmetic surgery team at Penningtons Manches, says: “The demand for both non-surgical and cosmetic procedures has continued to surge over the last 12 months and it is very worrying that patients are still taking risks with their safety and putting their lives in the hands of people who are not qualified.

“Unfortunately, we continue to see an increase in the number of cases of people who have been left with devastating complications following a cosmetic procedure that was not performed by a qualified specialist. It is imperative that those wanting a cosmetic procedure - whether surgical or non-surgical - see a properly trained and regulated specialist.”
