Posted: 03/11/2017

Penningtons Manches has achieved another year of stellar rankings in the latest edition of Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession, one of the foremost reference guides for the legal sector, which was launched on 1 November 2017.

Particular reference was paid in the new publication to Penningtons Manches’ service orientated approach, flexibility and commercial awareness with client citations describing the firm as ‘extremely competent and accomplished’, ‘terrific with communication’, ‘a very good name in the market’, ‘a pleasure to work with’ and ‘highly attuned to customers’ needs’. One source goes as far as to say ‘There are relatively few firms that have the mark of Penningtons Manches’ while another states that it has ‘a deep talent pool of diligent, responsible and responsive lawyers’.

Overall 40 of the firm’s practice areas have been recognised by the directory while 58 lawyers have been ranked as leaders in their field. Prestigious band 1 rankings were awarded to the clinical negligence, corporate, environment, family, intellectual property and personal injury teams. Other groups which performed particularly strongly include commercial dispute resolution, employment, information technology, pensions, professional discipline, real estate and real estate litigation.

On an individual level there was high praise for Hilary Aldred (employment), Alison Appelboam-Meadows (clinical negligence), Simon Bickerdike (corporate), Julie Bond (litigation), Stephanie Code (clinical negligence), Kerry Fretwell (family), Veronica Gilmour (family), Geoffrey Hudson (professional discipline), Ruth James (family), Philippa Luscombe (clinical negligence and personal injury), Jane Mitchell (family), Maria Riccio (pensions), Chris Shelley (intellectual property), Richard Smith (environment) and David Tighe (corporate) who were all ranked in band 1. Katrina Wingfield (professional disciopline) was named in the senior statesmen category while Catherine Bradshaw was listed as a star associate.

The Chambers guides have been ranking the best lawyers since 1990, and now cover 185 jurisdictions worldwide. A team of more than 170 full-time editors and researchers employed at the head office in London undertake year-round market analysis which includes conducting in-depth telephone interviews with a broad cross-section of clients and lawyers. In an independent survey of over 20,000 in-house counsel, 51% of respondents named Chambers as their primary reference point when identifying law firms.
