Surrey Sports Park teams up with Penningtons for school ‘Sportsability Day’

Posted: 03/12/2012

Surrey Sports Park hosted a ‘Sportsability Day’ sponsored by Penningtons Solicitors LLP at the end of November as over 60 local children with special needs were invited to try out four different sports.

Pupils from The Ridgeway School, The Park School, The Abbey School and Gosden House School all signed up to participate in the activities. Throughout the day trained coaches, including guests from Fulham Football Club, were on hand to give taster sessions in climbing, boccia, football and sitting volleyball, assisted by a team of volunteers from Penningtons which was led by corporate partner Simon Bickerdike, client care manager Jo Hines and trainee solicitor Matthew Briggs.

The initiative was the result of a long-standing partnership between Surrey Sports Park and Penningtons aimed at increasing community participation in sport across Guildford and the surrounding areas. Penningtons has sponsored the park since 2010, when it supported the Summer of Sport.

Commenting on the event, Simon Bickerdike, who is based at Penningtons’ Guildford office, said: “Penningtons has been delighted to join forces with Surrey Sports Park on this very worthwhile project. We hope that the children learnt something new and that they will now be inspired to continue these sports either in or out of school. Their enthusiasm during the event meant that it was an extremely rewarding occasion for everyone taking part.”

Roscoe Brown, head of partnerships at Surrey Sports Park, said: “We are once again privileged to be working alongside Penningtons for this fantastic cause. The day was an exceptional success and was enjoyed by the schools, national governing bodies and volunteers. I would like to thank Penningtons and the coaches who helped make this happen and I hope that we continue to work together to deliver more sport to more people more often.”
