International estate administration

Many people own property in more than one country and split their time between multiple locations. Lifetime planning can greatly mitigate the impact of taxation in each jurisdiction – whether on income, capital gains or inheritances.

When an individual dies leaving property overseas, this can lead to complex estate issues. We successfully completed a number of estate administrations during the course of last year, involving countries as diverse as the US, France, Portugal, India and Australia. Among the matters we handled for the executors were negotiations with the tax authorities on asset values, 're-sealing' of grants of probate, and calculating and obtaining relief under the special double taxation treaties applicable to estate taxes.
